Ebook About The #1 national bestselling “riveting” (The New York Times), “propulsive” (Time) behind-the-scenes account “that reads like a tense thriller” (The Washington Post) of the 116 days leading up to the American attack on Hiroshima by veteran journalist and anchor of Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace.April 12, 1945: After years of bloody conflict in Europe and the Pacific, America is stunned by news of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death. In an instant, Vice President Harry Truman, who has been kept out of war planning and knows nothing of the top-secret Manhattan Project to develop the world’s first atomic bomb, must assume command of a nation at war on multiple continents—and confront one of the most consequential decisions in history. Countdown 1945 tells the gripping true story of the turbulent days, weeks, and months to follow, leading up to August 6, 1945, when Truman gives the order to drop the bomb on Hiroshima. In Countdown 1945, Chris Wallace, the veteran journalist and anchor of Fox News Sunday, takes readers inside the minds of the iconic and elusive figures who join the quest for the bomb, each for different reasons: the legendary Albert Einstein, who eventually calls his vocal support for the atomic bomb “the one great mistake in my life”; lead researcher J. Robert “Oppie” Oppenheimer and the Soviet spies who secretly infiltrate his team; the fiercely competitive pilots of the plane selected to drop the bomb; and many more. Perhaps most of all, Countdown 1945 is the story of an untested new president confronting a decision that he knows will change the world forever. But more than a book about the atomic bomb, Countdown 1945 is also an unforgettable account of the lives of ordinary American and Japanese civilians in wartime—from “Calutron Girls” like Ruth Sisson in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to ten-year-old Hiroshima resident Hideko Tamura, who survives the blast at ground zero but loses her mother and later immigrates to the United States, where she lives to this day—as well as American soldiers fighting in the Pacific, waiting in fear for the order to launch a possible invasion of Japan. Told with vigor, intelligence, and humanity, Countdown 1945 is the definitive account of one of the most significant moments in history.Book Countdown 1945: The Extraordinary Story of the Atomic Bomb and the 116 Days That Changed the World (Chris Wallace’s Countdown Series) Review :
interesting reading experience.Chris Wallace is much more enjoyable in writing than on T. V. - or maybe it’s the subject matter? Whatever the reason, “Countdown 1945” had my attention from 3:30 am until I finished it 4.5 hours later. Wallace wrote with Mitch Weiss, (an investigative reporter for the A. P.), as his co-author and it is a brilliant pairing. The editing and publishing is also top notch. The book is written from a 3rd person POV and begins by introducing the key players involved in the 116 days that lead up to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: President Truman, key members of the Manhattan Project, a 10 year old survivor from Hiroshima and a woman who worked at a plant that supported the effort. These civilians are real and some are still living today. Their stories are authentic and compelling and bring the history to life, giving it a rare and unusual richness. Those 116 days are used as an organizational component for the book; the countdown, if you will. It adds an element of tension and expectation to the reading experience and made me feel like I HAD TO keep turning pages. To start with, those individual days were multiple pages long. Then, the closer we got to day 1, fewer pages were allocated between days and ultimately, the countdown was in hours and minutes and the breakouts were in paragraphs and then sentences; VERY effective.I had seen the movies about The Manhattan Project but it wasn’t until reading this book that much of the interplay between government, industry and civilian life became clear. There’s a spirit of cooperation, patriotism and willingness to sacrifice that is quietly inherent in the people this story is told thru. It’s an inspiring read, which is a strange thing to say when the story is about unleashing the only nuclear bomb ever deployed in warfare, but it’s how I felt about the PEOPLE, not the event.“Countdown 1945” is well written, it’s history, it’s biographical and it’s often like reading a good thriller only this time you will know the outcome when you get started; a worthy read📚 It might sound almost sacrilegious to describe “Countdown 1945” as beach friendly. It does, after all, traffic in high science, marvels of organization, and impossible stresses and pressures, not to mention an unresolvable ethical dilemma. The authors pack that whole load into an accessible narrative. The pace is brisk. Facts snap from the page. Anecdotes abound.Nevertheless, the book is scarcely more than a mix and abridgment of a vast field of study. For a closer look at the pilot of the B-29 that bombed Hiroshima and the war culture itself, Bob Greene’s “Duty” is a good beginning. To learn more about the struggle to develop the B-29, the Smithsonian’s “Building the B-29” is a fascinating summary. For more on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant scientist in charge, there’s much to choose from including “109 East Palace.” On the administrative military side it’s worth consulting “The Genius and the General” as Oppenheimer and Gen. Leslie Groves work things out. John Hersey’s “Hiroshima” is unforgettable and Richard Rhodes “The Making of the Atomic Bomb” is without peer. With so many other — and much better — sources available, the Wallace/Weiss book suits limited needs. It is useful as a basic, one-stop survey of the first atomic bomb. It makes a nice catalyst for a high school history class. It also can spend the summer in the backseat of a car, a book hopefully if haphazardly finished by Labor Day.
