Ebook About
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER  “Provocative and thrilling ... Loeb asks us to think big and to expect the unexpected.” —Alan Lightman, New York Times bestselling author of Einstein’s Dreams and Searching for Stars on an Island in MaineHarvard’s top astronomer lays out his controversial theory that our solar system was recently visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star. In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Avi Loeb, Harvard’s top astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.   In Extraterrestrial, Loeb takes readers inside the thrilling story of the first interstellar visitor to be spotted in our solar system. He outlines his controversial theory and its profound implications: for science, for religion, and for the future of our species and our planet. A mind-bending journey through the furthest reaches of science, space-time, and the human imagination, Extraterrestrial challenges readers to aim for the stars—and to think critically about what’s out there, no matter how strange it seems.

Book Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth Review :

When I learned this book would be available on Amazon, I immediately pre-ordered it and anxiously awaited its arrival. When it showed up on my Kindle I immediately stopped reading the book I had open and started reading Extraterrestial. To say I was disappointed is a gross understatement. I expected to learn more detail about Oumuamua than I had already read in internet reports, magazine articles, and newspaper stories. I did learn a lot more, just not about Oumuamua. I read every page of this book hoping that eventually I would "get to the good stuff." Instead of learning a lot more about Oumuamua, I Iearned about (spoiler alert) Dr. Loeb's childhood, his family's farm, his thoughts on science funding, his irritation at how much money the supercollider gets, Galileo, the size of mirrors on soon to be built telescopes, the spanish inquisition, the loss of Mayan writings, the size of mirrors on existing telescopes, who his guests are at dinner parties, his house, his kids, the name of co-authors on his many papers, his interview with CNN, his thoughts on war, his thoughts on nuclear weapons, his thoughts on climate change, his faith, jewish religious traditions, his vacations, his thoughts during those vacations, where his parents are buried, and if any reader did not already know all they cared to know about Dr. Loeb and his beliefs by page 220, he graciously included a couple of pages at the end of this book which are under the heading "About the Author."The book is not poorly written and does talk about (although not much) the "anomaly" called Oumuamua. Unfortunately you must wade through all the other philosophical meanderings of this Harvard professor to pull out any info about the comet/spaceship/lightsail/spacecraft/asteroid or whatever it is. Instead of this book being titled Extraterrestrial, it should have just done away with any title and left the author's name on the cover because that is what this book is about. Probably great reading for those who want to learn more about Dr. Loeb, not so great if you are curious about Oumuamua.
I received EXTRATERRESTRIAL early this afternoon, and finished it this evening. Two hundred mind-blowing pages. At least one reviewer before me gave it one star, saying he gave up after a single chapter because Avi Loeb didn't discuss the science. FFS, there ought to be a hard rule about not being able to leave reviews unless you actually finish the book.Loeb begins with his philosophical drive for asking the big questions about the nature of the universe. He includes relevant personal history, yet ultimately expounds upon extremely specific technical reasons—not merely insubstantial hypotheses—why he holds that 1I/2017 U1 is the product of extraterrestrial intelligence. By the end, his personal history becomes important, contributing to the philosophical and scientific defense of his position.Serious declarations deserve serious reading, whether they meet our first-chapter expectations or not. They always have. Stick with Loeb and give his words due consideration. His argument is deeply compelling, and his explanations for 1I/2017 U1's anomalies are much stronger than many of the arguments for 1I/2017 U1 being a naturally occurring object.I lean toward believing Loeb, but whether he's correct or not, his deeper premise holds even greater weight: We as a civilization are doing a poor job of getting out of our tribal, myopic, destructive patterns, and a poorer job of collectively considering the bigger questions and possibilities in our own lives and cosmos.1I/2017 U1 may have been a very recent, if subtle, wakeup call for humanity. Let's heed it, work together, and look more to the stars.
